Existential Therapy at Heathwell
ABOUT EXISTENTIAL THERAPY
Existential therapy offers space to explore your experience of life, the difficulties you face and what matters to you. It considers questions of identity, relationships, meaning, freedom and responsibility, alongside the realities of loss, uncertainty and change.
People often come when familiar ways of living no longer feel right. You may be meeting everyone’s expectations while feeling disconnected from yourself, facing a decision with no obvious answer, or questioning a relationship, career or role that once gave your life direction. Others seek support with anxiety, depression, grief or a sense of emptiness that is difficult to explain.
Existential therapy is for both individuals and couples. For couples, it offers a way to explore how each partner experiences the relationship, navigate different needs and values, and consider how to build a shared life while retaining a sense of yourselves as individuals.
An existential therapist works with you to understand your particular circumstances and possibilities. You do not need an interest in philosophy or clear answers to big questions; the starting point is whatever is troubling you.
FINDING YOUR OWN WAY
We make choices within circumstances we have not always chosen. Our relationships, health, finances, culture and history affect the possibilities available to us, and some situations involve limits we cannot change. Existential therapy helps you explore where you have room to act, what constrains you and how you want to respond.
You might have built a life around being dependable, successful or keeping other people happy, only to realise that you are unsure what you want yourself. Making a different choice may bring relief, but also guilt, uncertainty or the possibility of disappointing someone important to you.
Within a couple, these tensions may emerge around commitment, intimacy, parenthood or plans for the future. Therapy offers space to understand what is at stake for each person, express differences and consider how your choices affect one another.
The work can help you recognise what you value, acknowledge what a decision may cost and find a way forward that you feel more able to stand behind.

What can existential therapy help with?
People seek existential therapy for difficulties including:
Anxiety, uncertainty and fear about the future.
Depression, emptiness or a loss of meaning.
Grief, bereavement and awareness of mortality.
Relationship difficulties, loneliness and isolation.
Questions about identity, belonging and self-worth.
Major life transitions, including parenthood, separation, retirement or moving country.
Illness, ageing and changes in independence.
Difficult decisions or a sense of being stuck.
Pressure to live according to other people’s expectations.
Differences within a couple around values, closeness, independence or a shared future.
You do not need to be facing a crisis. You may want space to reflect on how you are living, understand a growing sense of dissatisfaction or consider what you want from the next stage of your life or relationship.
