Psychosynthesis Therapy at Heathwell
ABOUT PSYCHOSYNTHESIS
Wanting change does not always mean feeling ready for it. One part of you might want greater closeness while another fears becoming dependent. You might value security yet feel constrained by a life organised around it. These tensions can leave you stuck, even when you understand both sides.
Psychosynthesis is a therapeutic approach developed by psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli. It explores the different aspects of our psychological experience and how they relate to one another, alongside our capacity for choice, connection and growth.
It also makes room for questions about meaning, values and purpose. Its transpersonal dimension recognises that experiences of creativity, spirituality, nature or connection beyond ourselves can matter deeply. You do not need religious or spiritual beliefs to find the approach relevant.
MAKING SENSE OF INNER CONFLICT
We often describe ourselves as though we should have one consistent set of feelings. In practice, we can want several things at once. We may be caring and resentful, ambitious and exhausted, independent and longing for support.
Psychosynthesis sometimes describes these patterns as “subpersonalities”: recognisable ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that become prominent in particular circumstances. A part that strives to get everything right, for example, may have helped you gain approval while also making mistakes feel intolerable.
Recognising these patterns can help you understand what they protect, what they need and where they limit you. It can also create more room to respond thoughtfully when a familiar reaction takes over.
What can person centred therapy help with?
Common concerns include:
Feeling torn between your own wishes and your responsibilities.
Repeating roles such as the peacemaker, caretaker or person who always copes.
Perfectionism and difficulty accepting vulnerability.
Anger or resentment that is hard to understand or express.
A loss of purpose despite outward success or stability.
Changes in identity following parenthood, separation or retirement.
Conflict between cultural, family or personal values.
Questions about belonging, spirituality or what makes life meaningful.
These themes can connect with concerns such as men’s mental health, relationship difficulties and the lasting effects of painful earlier relationships. For example, expectations around strength or self-reliance can make it difficult to acknowledge a need for support, while an established caring role can leave someone unsure who they are outside it.
CHOICE, MEANING AND DIRECTION
The ability to make choices is an important theme in psychosynthesis. This includes recognising the limits of your circumstances while considering where you have room to act.
During a transition, the roles that once gave life structure may no longer fit. Becoming a parent, ending a relationship, experiencing loss or changing direction at work can raise questions about who you are and what comes next.
Psychosynthesis allows these questions to be explored alongside distress and practical concerns. Personal growth can involve acknowledging disappointment, anger or grief, as well as discovering possibilities you had not previously considered.
