Individual Therapy
You may be struggling with anxiety or low mood, finding relationships difficult, or going through a significant change in your life. Something painful may have happened that you are trying to make sense of. Some people come to us simply feeling stuck without quite knowing why.
At Heathwell, we offer individual counselling, psychotherapy and support from counselling psychologists. Our team includes therapists with decades of experience and a range of specialist interests and approaches.
Sessions are available in person in Blackheath, South East London, and online across the UK and Europe. A combination of in person and online appointments may also be possible, depending on your therapist.

Our areas of specialist support
Relational trauma and narcissistic abuse
Painful relationships can affect how you see yourself, what you expect from others and how safe you feel getting close to someone. You may find yourself doubting your judgement, anticipating criticism or putting other people’s needs ahead of your own.
Our team includes therapists with particular experience in narcissistic abuse and relational trauma. Therapy offers space to explore what happened, understand its continuing impact and consider what you need in your relationships now.

Betrayal and infidelity
Discovering an affair or another breach of trust can leave you questioning your relationship, your past and your sense of reality. You may feel pressure to make decisions before you have had time to understand what you feel.
Individual therapy gives you somewhere to speak openly about your own experience. You can attend whether you are staying in the relationship, separating or still unsure. Support is also available for people who have been unfaithful and want to understand their actions and take responsibility for what happens next.

ADHD and autism informed therapy
You may be exploring whether you are neurodivergent, adjusting to a diagnosis or looking for a therapist who understands how ADHD or autism affects your daily life and relationships.
Our ADHD and autism informed therapists take account of differences in communication, attention, processing and sensory needs. The work can include identity, masking, burnout, emotional overwhelm and the experience of feeling misunderstood, while leaving room for everything else that matters to you.

Different approaches to suit different people
Some people want a more structured way of working. Others need time to explore their history, relationships or feelings. You may find talking helpful, or prefer to include creative work.
Across our team, we offer a range of approaches. You do not need to choose one before contacting us. We can talk through what you are looking for and suggest therapists whose training and way of working may suit you.
Counselling and psychotherapy
Counselling and psychotherapy both offer a confidential relationship in which to explore difficulties and work towards change. There is considerable overlap between them. Depending on your needs and your therapist’s approach, sessions may focus on a current concern or explore experiences and patterns over a longer period.
Counselling psychology
Our counselling psychologists draw on psychological theory, research and therapeutic approaches to understand your difficulties in the context of your life. They work with you to develop a shared understanding of what is happening and agree how to approach it.
Psychodynamic therapy
Psychodynamic therapy explores how past experiences and relationships may influence your feelings and responses today. It offers space to understand recurring patterns, including those you can recognise but still find difficult to change.
Cognitive behavioural therapy
CBT explores the connections between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. It usually involves an agreed focus and structured work, which may include trying different responses to situations between sessions.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a structured therapy used to work with distressing memories and their continuing impact. Your therapist will discuss whether it is suitable for you and explain the preparation and process before beginning.
Art psychotherapy
Art psychotherapy offers another way to explore experiences that may be difficult to express in words. Sessions can involve art materials alongside conversation. You do not need artistic experience or skill.
Existential therapy
Existential therapy explores how you experience your life, relationships and the choices available to you. It can offer space for questions about identity, loss, responsibility, uncertainty and what gives your life meaning.
Integrative and person centred therapy
Integrative therapists bring together ideas from different approaches, adapting their work to the person they are meeting. Person centred therapy places particular emphasis on your experience and your ability to find your own direction within a supportive therapeutic relationship.
Our team also offers approaches including psychosynthesis and Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy. Individual profiles explain each therapist’s training and how they work.

Therapy for children and teenagers
Children and teenagers may show that they are struggling through changes in mood, behaviour, friendships or their engagement with school. They may find it difficult to explain what is wrong, or worry about upsetting the people close to them.
Our therapists adapt their work to the young person’s age, development and needs. Depending on the therapist, sessions may involve talking, creative work or art psychotherapy.
Before therapy begins, the therapist will discuss how parents or caregivers will be involved and explain confidentiality, including when information may need to be shared to keep a young person safe.

Short term or ongoing therapy
You may want to work on one concern over an agreed period, or need more time to explore difficulties that have been present for years.
We offer short term and ongoing therapy, depending on your needs and the therapist you work with. You can discuss the focus, frequency and likely duration together, and review these as the work develops.
Single Session Therapy is also available for people seeking a focused appointment around a particular issue or decision.

Finding someone you can work with
Our team brings experience from private practice, NHS services, schools and charitable organisations. Some have worked in the field for decades; others bring specialist training and experience with particular concerns or age groups.
You can browse our therapist profiles to read about their approach, qualifications, fees and availability. If you would prefer some guidance, we will speak with you about what you need and help you choose.
Getting started
Contact us with a little information about what brings you to therapy, when you are available and whether you would prefer sessions in Blackheath or online.
We can suggest a suitable therapist, who will contact you to arrange a free initial 20 minute consultation. This is an opportunity to ask questions, hear how they work and consider whether you would like to begin.
Fees and session lengths vary by therapist and are listed on their profiles. Availability for different age groups, approaches and appointment formats also varies.
