Therapy for Expats in Switzerland

Specialist support, wherever you are

Specialist therapy for expats living in Switzerland. Supporting individuals and couples through online therapy in multiple languages, alongside in-person therapy intensives.

Switzerland offers many expats exceptional professional opportunities, financial security and a high quality of life. Yet relocating often brings emotional and relational challenges that are rarely talked about. Building a new support network, adjusting to an unfamiliar culture, managing a demanding career and living far from family can leave people feeling isolated, overwhelmed or quietly disconnected, even when life looks successful from the outside.

At Heathwell, we offer online therapy for expats living in Switzerland, working with individuals and couples across Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Lausanne, Bern, Zug, Lugano and the rest of the country. Whether you have just relocated or have been settled in Switzerland for years, therapy offers a confidential space to work through what you are facing with a therapist who understands the particular pressures of international life: the loss of familiar reference points, the strain relocation can place on a relationship, and the pressure to appear as though everything is fine.

Our online sessions mean you can access support from wherever you are in Switzerland, without needing to find an English-speaking therapist locally or work around a long commute. This makes therapy realistic to fit around demanding jobs, young families or frequent travel.

Therapy for Individuals

Many of our clients are professionals working in finance, banking, technology, pharmaceuticals, international organisations, academia and other international sectors. Others have relocated because of a partner's career, are raising children abroad, or are navigating life between multiple countries and cultures.

We regularly support individuals with:

  • Anxiety, stress and burnout

  • Depression and low mood

  • Loneliness and difficulty building meaningful connections

  • Identity and belonging after relocation

  • Cultural adjustment and reverse culture shock

  • Neurodivergence, including ADHD and autism

  • Workplace pressures and career transitions

  • Grief, loss and major life changes

  • Parenting across cultures

Therapy for Couples

Couples therapy is one of our strongest areas of expertise. Relocating to a new country can put real strain on a relationship, even one that was previously stable, and many couples find that difficulties which had been manageable at home become harder to navigate once the usual support systems are gone.

We work with couples experiencing:

  • Communication difficulties and recurring conflict

  • Emotional distance and disconnection

  • Conflict following an international move

  • Infidelity, betrayal and rebuilding trust

  • Intercultural relationship challenges

  • Major life transitions, including relocation, parenthood and career change

  • Neurodiverse and mixed neurotype couples

Online Therapy That Fits Around International Life

Online therapy allows you to access support from home or the office, without the need to travel or work around a fixed commute. This makes it easier to fit sessions around demanding jobs, family commitments and frequent international travel.

Whether you are based in a major Swiss city or a smaller town, you can access therapy in English with experienced therapists who bring expertise across a wide range of emotional, psychological and relationship difficulties.

Therapists Who Understand Expat Life

We don't offer generic therapy. We offer therapy that meets you where you are and in what you actually need, which matters more than usual when you are living outside your home country.

Our team includes psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors and couples therapists, offering a range of approaches including CBT, EMDR, psychosexual therapy, and both long and short term therapy, so the way we work can be shaped around what actually suits you, rather than fitting you into a single model.

Our therapists who work with expats specialise in this area, with decades of experience supporting people navigating relocation, cultural adjustment and life between countries. Many have lived experience of this themselves, having lived and worked internationally, raised children across cultures, or grown up as third culture kids. They understand the realities of expat life not only clinically but personally, which means you are working with someone who genuinely gets it, rather than someone applying a generalist approach to a situation they have only read about.

Our therapists are fully qualified, professionally registered with recognised professional bodies and professionally insured to work with clients living in Switzerland. Most hold more than ten years of clinical experience, and many have also worked within academic settings, the NHS and other medical services, and the third sector.

Our team includes therapists based in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, allowing us to support clients across different time zones and backgrounds. Rather than assigning clients through an automated system, we take time to understand what you are looking for and carefully match you with the therapist whose experience, therapeutic approach and availability are the best fit for your needs.

Couples Intensives

Some of the most important conversations a couple needs to have don't fit neatly into fifty minutes a week. Alongside ongoing weekly therapy, Heathwell also offers couples intensives, available in person in London or Switzerland, or online, for couples who want to make focused, meaningful progress in a shorter space of time.

An intensive works differently to a standard session. Instead of opening up something difficult only to run out of time and carry it, unresolved, into the following week, a couple has an extended, uninterrupted block of time with a therapist, from a four-hour session to a full day, or across two to three days for deeper, more sustained work. There is enough space to actually get somewhere: to work through conflict, understand what happened, and begin rebuilding, all within the same sitting rather than stretched thin across months.

This suits couples working through infidelity, trying to decide whether to stay together, or who simply don't have the time or flexibility to commit to weekly sessions. Rather than meeting weekly over twenty-four weeks, the same depth of work can take place across three focused days.

This is particularly valuable for couples in Switzerland, who can choose to meet a therapist in person locally, combine the work with a visit to London, or do it all online without travelling at all, or at a location of their choice, as our therapists will travel to where you are, based on availability. Couples often turn to an intensive during a crisis, following infidelity, before making a significant decision such as separation or starting a family, or simply when they want to invest concentrated time in the relationship rather than waiting for change to happen gradually.
