ABOUT PSYCHOSEXUAL THERAPY

Psychosexual therapy, sometimes called sex therapy, offers support with sexual difficulties and concerns about desire, pleasure and intimacy. It helps you explore how your body, emotions, experiences and relationships affect your sexual wellbeing, and what might help you feel more comfortable and connected.

People come for different reasons. You may be experiencing a specific difficulty, such as problems with erections, pain during sex or difficulty reaching orgasm. You may have lost interest in sex, feel anxious about intimacy, or find it difficult to talk about what you want. Sometimes a change in your health, a distressing experience or tensions within a relationship have affected a sexual connection that previously felt easier.

For couples, psychosexual therapy offers space to explore differences in desire, understand how sexual difficulties affect each partner, and address feelings of rejection, pressure or frustration. It can help you communicate more openly about sex and find ways to rebuild intimacy that feel comfortable and satisfying for both of you.

You can also attend individually, whether you are single or in a relationship. Your partner does not need to take part for the work to be helpful.

WHEN SEX AND INTIMACY BECOME DIFFICULT

Sexual difficulties can become harder to navigate when worry, disappointment or misunderstandings build around them. Someone who is concerned about maintaining an erection, for example, may begin monitoring their performance rather than enjoying closeness. A partner may interpret avoidance as a loss of attraction, making it harder for either person to speak openly about what is happening.

Differences in desire can also leave one partner feeling rejected and the other feeling pressured. Over time, even affectionate touch may become uncomfortable if it carries an expectation that it should lead to sex.

Therapy offers space to understand these experiences without blame, explore each person’s needs and boundaries, and develop ways of approaching intimacy with less pressure. The aim is to find what feels comfortable, consensual and satisfying for you.
