Group Therapy for Dads
in Blackheath Village
A structured 10-session therapeutic group in Blackheath, South East London
Becoming and being a father can bring significant changes to a man’s identity, relationships and emotional life. Alongside love and meaning, fatherhood can involve pressure, uncertainty, isolation and a sense of responsibility that can be difficult to discuss openly.
Many fathers are trying to balance work, family life, their relationship with a partner and the emotional needs of their children. They may also be questioning how their own experiences of being parented influence the father they are becoming.
Our Dads’ Group brings together fathers from across London in a supportive and professionally facilitated setting. Across 10 sessions, members will have a place to share their experiences, learn from one another and develop a clearer understanding of themselves as fathers, partners and men.
The group is held in Blackheath Village and is easily accessible from Lewisham, Greenwich and other parts of South East and central London.
Who is the Dads’ Group for?
The group is for fathers who would value a place to reflect on their experience of fatherhood alongside other men.
You may be:
Adjusting to becoming a father
Feeling isolated or overwhelmed by the demands of parenting
Finding it difficult to balance work, relationships and family life
Experiencing tension or disconnection within your relationship
Wanting to feel more emotionally connected with your children
Thinking about how responsibilities are shared at home
Questioning the expectations you hold about being a father
Reflecting on your relationship with your own father
Wanting to become more confident and involved as a parent
You do not need to be experiencing a crisis or have attended therapy before. The group is open to fathers who are interested in understanding themselves more deeply and developing stronger relationships with their children, partners and other men.
The group will be shaped by the experiences brought by its members. Themes may include:
Identity and the transition into fatherhood
The emotional demands of parenting
Relationships with partners after becoming parents
Sharing the practical and emotional responsibilities of family life
Communication, conflict and emotional expression
Building stronger relationships with children
Balancing work, parenting and personal needs
Loneliness and the importance of connection with other fathers
Experiences of being fathered
Developing your own understanding of what it means to be a good father
The group offers room for honest discussion, reflection and learning. Members can hear how other fathers experience similar pressures, consider different perspectives and explore the patterns influencing their own family relationships.
What will the group explore?
Why join a group for dads?
Fathers can find themselves without many places where they can speak honestly about the emotional realities of parenting. Friendships may focus on practical matters or humour, while partners can become their main source of emotional support.
Meeting regularly with other fathers can reduce isolation and create a sense of connection. It can also help men recognise shared experiences, learn from one another and develop greater confidence in talking about emotions, relationships and parenting.
The group provides an opportunity to consider what you received from your own father or other male figures, what may have been missing and what you want to carry forward or approach differently with your own children.
Your group facilitator
The group is facilitated by Arran Knight, a BACP-accredited Psychosynthesis Counsellor specialising in men’s mental health, couples therapy and relationship difficulties.
Arran has extensive experience facilitating therapeutic groups for men. He has undertaken specialist training in men’s group work and also trains other practitioners in this area. His approach draws on psychosynthesis, attachment and relational therapy.
Arran is particularly interested in how early relationships, experiences of being fathered and inherited ideas about masculinity can shape men’s emotional lives, relationships and experiences as parents.
